Tools: Case Based Reasoning

An operational CBR tool means a CBR software application dedicated to transfer of water-related knowledge among European sub-catchments. The dedicated application contains among others a database with structured and formalised cases and the retrieval preferences including weights, similarities and the rules. Both the cases (structure, attributes, values) and the retrieval preferences ought to be defined by domain specialists in cooperation with knowledge engineers and application developers. If the reasoner is supposed to not only retrieve but also revise, reuse and/or retain the cases, additional software functionality should be provided, together with corresponding knowledge on these steps (e.g. the revision rules).

The CBR system is delivered in three phases

  • The build environment that consists of:
    • The CBR builder environment with custom extensions
    • A first version of the CBR engine that has core CBR capabilities
    • A very simple web user interface to test the core CBR capabilities of the engine
    • Tooling and instructions for the CBR publisher
  • The prototype environment that consists of:
    • Fully implemented CBR engine
    • A case database that is fully defined (but the data may be incomplete)
    • A first version of the web user interface
  • The final version of all deliverables:
    • The complete CBR builder environment , including documentation
    • The CBR publisher tooling and manuals, and data files used to create the case database
    • A complete case database
    • The final version of the web user interface.
